APMA foundation

APMA Friends ArmsThe Armenian Project Management Association was established by a group of PM professionals in September 2007. The idea to establish such an association of professionals was proposed for the first time by Gregor Vahanyan (founder) in 2004, and he and Albert Poghosyan planned to establish a training centre to be able to provide training and certification.

Three years later, Albert graduated from the University in Manchester and returned with the intention of establishing this association. Albert did not focus principally on project management through his course of study, but did attain PRINCE2 certification. In time, he was able to identify five others with whom he could begin the process of implementing on the establishment and registration of APMA. These included Aleksandr Bakhshetyan, Arsen Gevorgyan and Hrant Darbinyan, as well as two very respected and experienced project managers Armen Kocharyan and Grigor Vahanyan. This was the core team that worked to establish this organization.

The task of registration has been fraught with challenges, but within two months we have managed to galvanize propestive members and increase our membership.  As the organization is still in its infancy, we have adopted an inclusive and non-hierarchical approach, allowing new members to join as co-founders.  All co-founders have been investing their time and abilities alongside the initial founding team.   Albert has been teaching PM at the American University of Armenia’s Extension Course and has received extensive interest from a large number of students who are keen to be part of APMA’s future development.

Based on the investment of the co-founders over an initial six months, APMA has been successful in developing a logo and a unique brand identity. Albert has worked hard to set up the first APMA office at 24 Artsakh Street in Yerevan. The office is being used primarily as meeting place, but upon receipt of a Grant from CAPS (USAID), APMA has now embarked on the process of developing the scope of the official membership and delivering value to members.

This, thus far, is the story of the establishment of APMA. We strive to maintain a high level and quality to the substance and knowledge we disseminate to our membership, as well as to the experience of those partaking in the growth of this very crucial professional network in Armenia.
